Day Overrides

Day Overrides let you mark special days on your calendar that change or replace the normal lesson schedule. Use them for field trips, co-op days, testing, sick days, or any other events.

What Are Day Overrides?

A day override is a special marker on a calendar day that can:

  • Replace regular lessons with a special event
  • Record non-standard school activities
  • Track instructional and non-instructional days for record-keeping

Event Types

Field Trips (Instructional)

Mark a day as a field trip. The day counts as an instructional day for record-keeping purposes, even though regular lessons may not be completed.

Co-op Days (Instructional)

For families who participate in homeschool co-ops, mark these days to track cooperative learning activities. Co-op days count as instructional days.

Testing Days (Instructional)

Mark standardized testing days or assessment days. These count as instructional days and are tracked separately from regular lessons.

Sick Days (Non-Instructional)

When a student is sick, mark the day as a sick day. This is classified as non-instructional and excused. Regular lessons scheduled for this day can be automatically rescheduled.

Custom Events

Create your own event type with a custom name for anything that doesn't fit the predefined categories. You choose whether it's instructional or non-instructional.

Instructional vs. Non-Instructional

This classification helps with record-keeping requirements:

  • Instructional — Counts toward your required school days (field trips, co-op, testing)
  • Non-Instructional — Does not count toward school days (sick days, family emergencies)

Scope

Set who the override applies to:

  • All Students — The override applies to everyone in your homeschool
  • Specific Students — Select individual students (e.g., only one student was sick)

Recurrence

Day overrides can recur on a schedule:

  • Single occurrence — Just this one date
  • Weekly — Repeats every week on the same day (e.g., every Wednesday is co-op day)
  • Monthly — Repeats on the same date each month
  • Yearly — Repeats on the same date each year (e.g., annual testing week)

Date Range

Day overrides can span a single day or a date range. When creating an override, set the start and end dates — this is handy for multi-day events like testing week, a week-long field trip, or an extended illness.

Notes

Each override has an optional notes field where you can record details about the event — what was visited on a field trip, which co-op classes were attended, or any other information useful for record-keeping.

Suppress Regular Lessons

Each override has a Keep Regular Lessons on this Day toggle:

  • Off — The event takes over the day. Regular lessons are suppressed, and if auto-reschedule is enabled they move to the next available school day.
  • On — Regular lessons and tasks stay visible alongside the event. Use this when you want to log a field trip, testing day, or other event without clearing the day's normal work.

This wording is intentional: the switch describes what the student will still see on that day, rather than the internal "suppress" setting saved behind the scenes.

How Overrides Interact with Lessons

When a day has an override with lessons suppressed:

  • Regular lessons for that day are hidden from the schedule
  • Suppressed lessons are automatically rescheduled if auto-reschedule is enabled
  • The override event appears on the calendar in place of regular lessons
  • Already-completed lessons on override days are still tracked normally

Calendar Appearance

Day overrides appear on the calendar with:

  • A distinctive icon or label indicating the event type
  • The event name visible in day and week views
  • Color coding to distinguish instructional from non-instructional days

Tip: Use recurring weekly overrides for regular co-op days. Set it once and it automatically appears every week!
